RIP Gerard Smith

Gerard Smith, bassist & keyboardist for TV On The Radio, passed away yesterday at a courageous fight against lung cancer.  He was just 36.

The first time I saw TV On The Radio perform was at Joe’s Pub just as they were about to release Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes.  Gerard and Jaleel Bunton had just joined the band.  Gerard’s thundering bass lines to ‘The Wrong Way’ opened the set and TVOTR instantly became on my favorite bands.

Kelsey Warren of Pillow Theory and I (along with a park full of fans) braved a driving rain to see TV On The Radio at Central Park Summerstage.  Killer set and I was able to get some of the shots that ended up in my book, Black Rock Volume 1.  One of the many highlights of the night was the gorgeous ‘Love Dog’, which features the almost meditative Rhodes piano work of Gerard Butler.

I had just seen the band play a killer show at Radio City Music Hall last week and, like a lot of fans, was looking forward to seeing Gerard back with the guys on stage.

My deepest prayers and sympathies go out to Gerard’s family and everyone in the TV On The Radio camp.

Rest in peace Gerard.
