25 years ago this month, Vernon Reid, Konda Mason, and Greg Tate (along with a host of talented musicians, writers and straight up fans too numerous to mention) formed The Black Rock Coaltion as means to reclaim & re-emphasize the Black component in Rock n Roll.
25 years later, The Black Rock Coalition is still here.
I’ve been a part of it for 22 of those 25 years and it’s had a profound impact on my life. Thanks to everyone who has participated and continues to participate in BRC events. There’s just a flood of memories that are coming to me now: The meetings up in pre-gentrified Harlem; the meetings after the meetings; the Stalking Heads shows at CBGBs; all of those who have passed on. Wow. There’s a lot there.
The incredible thing about this run has been that its been done for the pure love of the music. The BRC has never had an office, never took corporate money and everyone who has been in executive positions did it for no money. Again, its for the pure love of the music and what it represents.
I’m proud of being a part of this. Thanks to everyone again who made and continue to make this happen. I love you all!
